With the Chinese New Year well under way, Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture has teamed up with London University’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) to showcase a much anticipated film week that fulfills a central role in the “Understanding Taiwan through Film and Documentary Screening” project.

Three of the films due to be screened, namely The Affair of Three Cities: The Game (台北京之比賽), The Chai-wan Matchup (我們)and Face to Face (正面迎擊), are documentaries by Director Chung Chuan (鍾權), who will be present for a question-and-answer session on Wednesday, at which he is anticipated to explain the methods and notions behind his filmmaking. Chung, who studied under the reputed documentary maker Yang Li-chou (楊力州), commands a mastery of narrative that has earned him both critical and popular acclaim in Taiwan.

Viva Tonal: The Dance Age (跳舞時代), by award-winning documentary director Kuo Chen-ti (郭珍弟), takes its title from a hit song of the 1930s and portrays the first golden era of popular music in Taiwan. The film will feature a performance by the singer Li Kun-cheng (李坤城), who has come to be regarded as the national treasure of the Taiwanese music scene.

The Boys from Fengkuei (風櫃來的人)is an early work by acclaimed director Hou Hsiao-hsien (候孝賢)that won best film at the Nantes Film Festival in France, greatly contributing to his reputation as an auteur of international caliber.

Starting in November 2013, the Ministry of Culture and SOAS have cooperated in screening a diverse series of films including, 62 Years and 6,500 Miles Between and Tongues of Heaven. Aficionados of Taiwanese film and cultural enthusiasts have come in large numbers to a better understanding of Taiwan. 而「風櫃來的人」更是候孝賢導演的早期經典名作,該片也曾獲得法國南特影展最佳影片的獎項,促使候孝賢導演打入國際,透過此次影展,可以一窺候孝賢導演的電影世界。
